April 2010
Aberdeen retain Scottish National League Title
Alastair Gorrie reports
So after the shortest of National League seasons I can ever recall, Aberdeen Squash Racquets Club did the needful and duly retained the Scottish National League title.

With just eight teams lined up before the start of the League things deteriorated soon after when two dropped out prior to any match being played. Half-way through the season and we lose another two. So there it was. Four teams left in the League and straight to the season ending Play-Offs.

Edinburgh Sports Club hosted this year and so along with them, Western (Glasgow), Peter Nicol Centre (Aberdeen) and us, we between us organised and then ran a tournament in Scottish Squash's absence. I think most of their officials were at a neighbouring Club for the Under 13/15 Home Internationals.

Aware of exactly what players other teams were able to put out, ASRC held back their professionals (Selby, Clyne and Parke) and instead went with homebred players such as myself, Farmer Jacobsen and Keith Simpson. Frania Gillen-Buchert (Scotland's number one female) made up the four player mixed team.

Peter Nicol Centre were unable to call on the man himself and so also went with homebred players - brothers Innes and Iain Young, and juniors Chris Shinnie and Lindsay Ackers. Western went with Iain Logan, Colin Stirrat, Kenny Boyle and Morgan Morgan, and the hosts went with Simon Boughton, brothers Chris and Grant Gray, and Moira Atkinson.

This meant that for the first time in many years it was an all Scottish affair, just don't ask me if I find that a positive though, especially when only one of a ten strong team headed to the European Team Championships was playing.

Semi-Final results:

Aberdeen Squash Racquets Club 4-0 Peter Nicol Centre
Alistair Gorrie bt Innes Young 11/6 11/8 11/4
Jamie Jacobsen bt Iain Young 11/6 11/4 12/10
Keith Simpson bt Chris Shinnie 11/7 11/9 11/6
   Frania Gillen-Buchert bt Lindsay Ackers 11/3 11/0 11/4

Edinburgh Sports Club 3-1 Western
Simon Boughton bt Iain Logan 11/9 12/10 11/3
   Chris Gray bt Colin Stirrat 6/11 11/9 11/8 13/11
Grant Gray lost to Kenny Boyle 11/8 7/11 8/11 6/11
   Moira Atkinson bt Morgan McGuire 11/7 10/12 11/8 11/7

Final results:

Aberdeen Squash Racquets Club 3-1 Edinburgh Sports Club

Alistair Gorrie lost to Simon Boughton 6/11 5/11 6/11
   Jamie Jacobsen bt Chris Gray 12/10 9/11 11/6 11/4
Keith Simpson bt Grant Gray 11/4 11/7 11/6
   Frania Gillen-Buchert bt Moira Atkinson 11/6 11/3 11/4

ASRC will now follow closely other reports coming in to see what nations will be sending what clubs, and who these Clubs will potentially have playing for them at the 2010 European Club Championships.

See you all in Ponte!
