Victorian Open 2011
07-10 Jul, Melbourne, Australia, $5k+$4k

Finals:
Leo Au bt Lewis Walters                11/5, 11/9, 11/8
Melody Francis bt Ahn Eun Chan   11/5, 11/8, 11/2

Three in a row for  Francis

Melbourne’s Melody Francis made it three wins in a row on the women’s professional squash tour when she beat Korea’s Ahn Eun Chan in straight games to win the Victorian Open in Melbourne on Sunday.

Francis, who survived a tough semi-final against Wales’s Deon Saffery earlier in the day, beat Ahn 11-5, 11-8, 11-2 to claim the fourth title of her career.

Hong Kong’s Leo Au later downed Englishman Lewis Walters 11-5, 11-9, 11-8 to take out the men’s title.

Francis, who has reached a career-high 44 on the world rankings, took advantage of a tired looking Ahn, who also had to survived a marathon semi-final against Hong Kong’s Liu Tsz Ling to reach the decider.

The 22-year-old delighted home fans with a commanding victory to achieve a goal she set earlier in the year of winning her home state’s Open.

“Deon scared the life out of me in the semi-finals,” Francis admitted later. “I was feeling flat at the start of the final so I was really happy that I could regroup and come out firing and win three-love. Ahn got me last time I played her (in Perth) so I am happy to get some revenge.”

Au continued his family’s success in Australia with his win over Walters in the men’s final.

Big sister Annie won the Australian Open in 2008 and Au always looked like taking the Victorian title after surviving a close second game against Walters, who later admitted he was disappointed to let his opponent open a two-game lead.

“I was upset to lose that second game but a few close calls went against me,” Walters said. “We were both a bit patchy in the third – we both had close matches in the morning and it was difficult to come back and play again.”

Quarters in Melbourne

Day three of the Victorian Open began early with entrants in the graded events taking to the courts first. With over 100 local players, the atmosphere was buzzing from the outset.

Melody Francis and Amanda Cranston were first up on the show court with Melody cruising through to the semis with an 11/7, 11/3, 11/4 win. Ahn Eun Chan accounted for 5th seed Maggy Marshall in three and Deon Saffery ended Sarah Cardwell’s run 11/3, 11/7, 11/2. In the last quarter final Liu Tsz-Ling from Hong Kong had a four game win over countrywoman Elise Ng to advance to the semi-finals.

In the Men’s Open, top seed and local Rex Hedrick took 77 minutes to subdue England’s Anthony Graham in five.

“It was tough. Anthony was good early but as I got into the match I found a few things that enabled me to get more control of the points. I am happy to get that win and am looking forward to tomorrow’s match against Lewis [Walters].”

In the other quarterfinals, second seed Leo Au defeated Rory Pennell 11/6, 7/11, 11/6, 11/8 and Lewis Walters accounted for South Australian Justin Beard in three.

Austria’s Aqeel Rehman was the final player through to tomorrow’s semi-finals after defeating Scotland’s Kevin Moran 11/9, 11/8, 11/5. “I’m happy to win in 3 and I’m feeling good. I’ve been down to the spa to loosen up a few niggles and am now looking ahead to tomorrow,” said Aqeel.
