Wellington Open 2010
04-06 June, New Zealand

King's collection continues to grow
Gary Denvir reports

Joelle King has added yet another squash title to her tally.

The world number 20 has taken out the Pelorus Trust Wellington Open at the Mana Squash Club - her fourth domestic title in five weeks. The 21-year-old already has the Waikato Open, Remuera/Auckland Open and Herne Bay Open titles in the bag.

Once again, King was simply too good for the opposition, beating former world number 24 Tamsyn Leevey 3-0 in the final to go through the event without dropping a game.

Meanwhile, the men's open draw also went to plan with top seed Martin Knight taking out the title. However, the world number 42 had to work a little harder than he may have expected in the final, beating second seed Evan Williams 3-1.

Women's Final:
1. Joelle King (Waikato) bt 2. Tamsyn Leevey (Wellington) 3-0
Third place playoff
4. Megan Craig (Canterbury) bt 3. Lana Harrison (Auckland) 3-1

Men's Final:
1. Martin Knight (Wellington) bt 2. Evan Williams (Wellington) 3-1
Third place playoff
3. Josh Greenfield (Central) bt Shane Johnston (Wellington) 3-0

King in line for another title
Gary Denvir reports

Rising New Zealand squash star Joelle King is one win away from adding yet another title to her tally.

The world number 20 has strolled into the final of the Pelorus Trust Wellington Open, with a 3-0 win over fourth seed Megan Craig at the Mana Squash Club. The 21-year-old has already picked up three titles in the last four weeks.

King will face second seed Tamsyn Leevey in the title decider. Leevey advanced with a 3-1 victory over third seed Lana Harrison.

Meanwhile, top seed Martin Knight is on target to take out the men's title after a 3-0 win over surprise semifinalist Shane Johnston. As expected his opponent in the final will be fellow Wellingtonian Evan Williams, although the second seed had his work cut out in the semis. The 20-year-old fought for 65 minutes before overcoming third seed Josh Greenfield 3-2.

Timely win for Redman in Wellington

Eastern's Bryce Redman has supplied the only upset in the opening round of the Pelorus Trust Wellington Open.

Ninth seeded Redman has beaten eight seed Josh King 3-2, in a 95 minute thriller at the Mana Squash Club. It is a timely victory for the Napier teen, with the New Zealand team named in less than two weeks for the Junior Men's World Champs in Ecuador later this year.

The remainder of the men's first round matches went to plan as far as the seeds are concerned, including a comfortable 3-0 win for title favourite Martin Knight, who downed Cody Herman in just 15 minutes.

The two first round matches played in the women's draw were also bereft of surprises, with top seed Joelle King remaining on course for her fourth title in five weeks with a 3-0 victory over Rebecca Barnett while fourth seed Megan Craig edged fifth seeded Emma Millar 3-2.
