Paraguay Open 2017
15-20 May, Asuncion, Paraguay, $10k

20
-May, Final:
Romiglio takes his first "Guampa"

Esteban Casarino reports

Leandro Romiglio from Argentina took his first title of the Tour de las Americas Paraguay Open in Asuncion as he beat Shawn Delierre in the final at the new national squash centre.

With that he lifted his first "Guampa" the beautiful trophy the is used traditionally to drink a cold infusion called "terere".

The match started with a very fast pace, both players trying to keep it in the back corners. The first few rallies lasting more than a minute.

Most of the time it was Romiglio in control of the T as Deliere's game wasn't deep enough and to make it worse his attacking game was very well read by the Argentinean.

Only in the second Leandro did lose a bit of concentration at a 5/1 lead, losing the game 11/6.

After that he controlled the T, the pace and the score all to well for Shawns legs, that were carrying too much of the very long semi-finals.

Local favourite Romiglio ended the match in a superb form to complete a 11/6, 6/11, 11/5, 11/1 victory in 62 minutes.

19-May, Semis:
Delierre and Romiglio make the final

As expected the semi-final between Shawn Delierre and Angus Gillams  was a long, disputed game. The referee had a lot of participation probably having as many decisions as points played. Gillams led 2-1 before Deliere equalizing at 2-2.

The fifth game was thrill having Deliere leading all the way up to 10-8 but the drama continued as Gillams had match ball at 11-10 before Deliere clinching a no let and a strokes for a 13-11 win.

The second semi started at a very fast pace, imposed by Leandro Romiglio, but Vhris Gordon fought back well, looking to volley imposing his larger wingspan.

Romiglio saved 2 game balls and even had 1 but lost in a very tight game but it took a lot of energy from Gordons legs. From them on it was the Argentinean who was in control of the T most of the time.

Gordon as a experienced player kept figthing and made Romiglio work hard for the win.

This is going to be the second final Delliere and Romiglio will have as a repeat of the Resistencia Opens final of 2015
