2011 Women's US Open to be
Biggest Ever
WISPA has confirmed that the 2011 US Open will become part
of the WISPA World Series - and boast the biggest prize-fund
in its history.
The move will see the prize-fund double from the 2010 figure
to $60,000 - and the prestigious event join the raft
of events on the re-branded WISPA World Series, the
top tier events on the women's tour.
Drexel University will host the 2011 US Open Squash
Championships at the newly-renovated Daskalakis Athletic
Center, in downtown Philadelphia, from 1-6 October.
The event will enjoy a similar status to the men's PSA event
in what will be only the second time in the history of the
competition that the two events have been staged
simultaneously.
"We are delighted that US Squash has been able to confirm
that the US Open in Philadelphia will be part of this
exciting new era," said WISPA Tour Director Tim Garner.
"It is only right that such a prestigious title is part of
the elite group on the WISPA World Tour. The US is key
market for squash and we are keen to be able to help push
the profile of the sport there. We hope to add further
events to the WISPA World Series in the near future."
US Squash CEO Kevin Klipstein is also delighted to be
backing this historic initiative: "We are proud to have the
US Open as part of the WISPA World Series. We support the
increased partnership between WISPA and PSA, and bringing
the men's and women's tour naming into alignment makes
sense.
"Drexel University will be an outstanding host this year as
we run the men's and women's championships simultaneously
for only the second time ever. This is a major first step
towards our long term goal of making the US Open the largest
prize money squash tournament in the world."
Malaysia's world No1 Nicol David currently leads the WISPA
World Series Standings after winning the inaugural event,
the Cedrus Investments Cayman Islands Open in April.

Philadelphia to play host to prestigious title for
first time in nearly two decades ... |
31-Jan-11:
U.S. SQUASH has announced that Drexel University will
host the 2011 U.S. Open Squash Championships, the most
prestigious squash tournament in the country, on October
1st – 6th at the newly renovated Daskalakis Athletic
Center in downtown Philadelphia, PA.
Offering $175,000 in prize money, the tournament will host
both the Men’s and Women’s Championships for only the second
time in the event’s history, having been held simultaneously
for the first time in 2010 at the Pritzker Pavillion in
Chicago’s Millennium Park.
The tournament will attract the best squash players in the
world to Philadelphia, and in the United States ESPN3 will
broadcast the semi-finals and finals of the Men's
Championships online, reaching 60 million households.
U.S. SQUASH and Drexel University will partner closely in
hosting the Championships, Drexel offering extensive
experience with major events, having hosted to the 2008 USA
Table Tennis Olympic Trials, playing host to the 2013
Division I, II and III Men's Lacrosse Championships as well
as sponsoring 16 Division I varsity athletic programs.
“Drexel University is delighted to host the 2011 U.S. Open
Squash Championships in Philadelphia, the cradle of liberty
and the home of many of the game’s most storied players and
historic squash venues,” said John Fry, President of
Drexel University. “Drexel University is founded on equality
and competitive opportunity in venues that extend beyond
academics, including the frontiers of entrepreneurship,
technological innovation and athletics. The championships
will be hosted in an urban collegiate athletic facility that
will attract a diverse fan-base. We are truly honored to be
the host of this remarkable championship.”
“Drexel University is the proud home of Squash Smarts, an
award-winning model for after school co-curricular
enrichment for elementary school children in Philadelphia,”
said Dr. Eric Zillmer, Director of Athletics at
Drexel University. “Our commitment to promoting healthy
lifestyles through the sport of squash has uplifted a
generation of historically underserved urban youth. Bringing
the 2011 U.S. Open to Drexel University and the city of
Philadelphia will give these youth reason to continue their
investment in squash and pursue their dreams to transform
their lives.”
“We are thrilled to have the U.S. Open Squash Championships

entirely new level, developing it into what we fully
anticipate to be the best squash tournament in the world for
fans and players alike.”

take place at area clubs on September 29th and 30th. Tickets
