A NEW WORLD …
No, do not panic (or rejoice, depending…). I don’t have the intention of
going away to start a new life all over again… But Mr John Massarella
is, as he heard last Thursday that he was England's new World Referee,
the first one since the nomination of Tony Parker 13 years ago…
“I’m very proud”, said a very smiling John. “When I think I became a
national grade in 2000, I went as quickly as you can go. I feel proud, but I
also know that it took a lot of hard work… Yes, I worked hard, because
you’ve got to maintain a very high standard, and we’ve got to learn and
reassess yourself all the time. But I didn’t forget to enjoy it as well…”
Well, it’s nice to see good hard working people getting to the top of a
discipline. So, congratulations, John, from all at SquashSite…
Framboise
In May 2004 Framboise asked John his
views on refereeing issues:
Why do you LIKE refereeing?
I like to be involved at a high level of sport, and I
need the adrenaline. I need it in my work, and I need it in my
leisure. I love the challenge!
What do you HATE
about Refereeing ?
I hate to watch any player, at any level, who doesnt
give a 100%. What are they doing there if not to give it all?
What would you
CHANGE in the Refereeing System ?
I dont like the politics of it, but Im afraid it is
inevitable.
What would you
CHANGE in the general organisation ?
You know, refereeing is my leisure, so I go with how it
is. I dont have the time to think deep enough how I would change
it. I take it as it is.
What is your
favourite
SCORING SYSTEM,
and why ?
I hate the PAR to 9, because I dont think it gives the
game time to develop whatsoever. Im a purist, and I like the
hand-out to 9, or the PAR to 15. But the PAR to 9 does have a place
for the club spectator of the National League, who likes a drink
between games, three games in the night, no more than 2 hours of
squash. But not in major events, no way.
UPDATE, July 2005:
When PAR to 11 first came in I was unsure, but over the last few months
there have been some really good matches, and it's maybe beginning to grow
on me.
